Children are remarkably responsive to holistic therapies. Because their bodies are constantly growing and adapting, gentle treatments such as pediatric acupuncture, Shonishin, pediatric massage, and craniosacral therapy can often create meaningful improvements with very minimal intervention.
At Wellness Wisdom, pediatric acupuncture in Edmonton is approached with great care, patience, and respect for each child’s comfort level. Treatments are always adapted to the child’s age, temperament, sensitivities, and health concerns. For many children, especially babies and younger kids, needles are either used very briefly or not needed at all.
Our goal is to support children naturally while helping parents feel informed, empowered, and supported throughout the healing process.

Children often respond very quickly to treatment. In many cases, improvements in sleep, digestion, pain, or emotional regulation may be noticed within only a few visits.
Pediatric acupuncture is a gentle form of Traditional Chinese Medicine adapted specifically for babies, children, and teenagers. Treatments work to regulate the nervous system, support digestion and immunity, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and help the body return to balance naturally.
Parents are often surprised to learn that acupuncture for children looks very different than acupuncture for adults. For babies and toddlers, needles are typically inserted very briefly and immediately removed. Many children barely notice them. School-aged children may have needles retained for only a few minutes, while for teenagers needles are often left in for a similar length of time as for adults.
Importantly, treatment is never forced. Building trust and helping children feel safe is always the priority. Needle-free options are available if parents or children aren't open to needles.
Not every child is comfortable with needles initially, and that is totally understandable. Several gentle needle-free therapies can be equally effective and are often integrated into treatment plans.
Shonishin is a traditional Japanese pediatric therapy developed specifically for children. Instead of needles, small metal tools are used to gently stroke, tap, or brush the skin.
Most children find Shonishin calming and enjoyable. It is especially helpful for:
Anxiety and nervous system regulation
Digestive concerns
Sleep difficulties
Frequent illness
Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers who aren't ready for needles
Pediatric Tuina is a specialized form of Chinese medical massage that uses gentle hand techniques to support children’s health.
It can be particularly beneficial for:
Constipation
Colic
Coughs and asthma
Digestive discomfort
Sleep issues
Anxiety and stress
Parents can also be taught simple techniques to continue at home between treatments.
Craniosacral therapy is a very gentle hands-on therapy that helps release tension patterns in the body and regulate the nervous system. Treatments are relaxed and child-friendly. Babies may breastfeed or sleep during treatment, while older children can play quietly with toys or watch a video on their parent's phone or tablet.
Craniosacral therapy may help children with:
Birth trauma or difficult deliveries
Sensory processing challenges
ADHD and behavioural difficulties
Headaches and migraines
Sleep disturbances
Anxiety and emotional dysregulation
Recurrent ear or sinus infections
Tension-related pain
Sleep problems can affect the entire family. Pediatric acupuncture and bodywork therapies may help children who struggle with:
Difficulty falling asleep
Frequent waking
Nightmares and night terrors
Restlessness
Poor sleep quality
By calming the nervous system and supporting overall regulation, children often begin sleeping more deeply and consistently over time.
Digestive concerns are among the most common reasons parents seek pediatric acupuncture in Edmonton. Children may benefit from treatment for:
Colic
Gas and bloating
Constipation
Loose stools
Stomach aches
Reflux
Breastfeeding challenges
Addressing digestive issues early in life can help support healthier long-term digestive function and immunity.
Children and teenagers can experience significant discomfort from:
Teething pain
Headaches and migraines
Ear pain
Growing pains
Neck and back tension
Sports injuries
Gentle pediatric therapies can help reduce pain, improve circulation, and support the body’s natural healing processes. Genevieve has participated as an acupuncture provider in the Pediatric Integrative Medicine Trial at the Stollery, where pediatric acupuncture has been explored for pain management in children.
Children experiencing emotional, behavioural, or sensory challenges often benefit greatly from nervous system-focused therapies. Pediatric acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, and bodywork may help support children struggling with:
ADHD and concentration issues
Anxiety and stress
Emotional regulation
Sensory processing disorders
Autism spectrum conditions
Behavioural dysregulation
Many parents report improvements in calmness, focus, sleep quality, and overall resilience.
Every child is unique, and treatments are always individualized. Some children benefit most from acupuncture, while others respond better to Shonishin, craniosacral therapy, Acutonics and pediatric massage, often as a combination approach. The intention is never simply to suppress symptoms, but to support the child’s overall health, resilience, development, and well-being in a gentle and compassionate way.
Whether your child is struggling with digestion, immunity, sleep, pain, emotional regulation, or developmental challenges, pediatric acupuncture in Edmonton may provide a safe and supportive option for care.
Yes. Research has shown pediatric acupuncture to be safe when performed by properly trained practitioners.
The needles used for acupuncture for children are very fine and barely felt; most of the time babies don't cry during treatment. In contrast, preschool and elementary school aged children may have some anxiety about needles from experiences with immunizations. At Wellness Wisdom we often refer to needles as "taps" or "tickles" rather than using the word "needle." That said, if children are too afraid of needles, other effective needle-free techniques are available.
The actual treatment time is usually around a half an hour (the initial treatment requires additional time for discussing the child's health history). The treatment generally involves various treatment modalities, such as acupressure, Shonishin, tuning forks, craniosacral therapy, acupuncture (if the child is open to it), cupping or guasha . Children can play with toys, including the small tub of playdoh that is complementary, read books, or watch shows on tablets or phones during the treatment. Children can also sit on their parent's lap if that is where they are most comfortable.
Babies and children are often relaxed after the treatment. Sometimes they will fall asleep during the treatment, or will have a longer nap than usual after the treatment. If the child is coming for a constipation related concern, often there will be a bowel movement within 24 hours of the treatment.
Children often enjoy the treatment experience. They are offered a small tub of playdoh on arrival that they can play with through the course of the treatment (if age appropriate) and are also able to choose a prize (generally a choice between stickers, a tattoo, or a ring) after the treatment.

“I wanted to let you know that J has been sleeping amazingly well. She settles easily and calmly at night and sleeps the whole night with no disturbances. If she does wake, the disturbance is very minor and she goes back to sleep right away. We have decided that as of now, she does not need any more acupressure treatments. Thank-you so much for the work you did with her and we will definitely call on you again should the need arise.” – J
“I just wanted to let you know that M has been doing really well this week. Since the treatment with Genevieve all of his teething symptoms seem to have dispersed. He has been sleeping really well, a solid 4–5 hours, waking once to nurse and then back for another 4–5 hours.” – A
“I took 2 of my girls to see Genevieve for acupuncture for migraine headaches that came up as they each hit puberty. In just one session for each of them, and one follow up for one, Genevieve was able to help alleviate them. Four years later, the girls have not had one migraine since. Genevieve is also a real pleasure to see as a patient as she really listens and cares.” – S
"She has helped my daughters with their hormones and overall wellbeing, and one of my children who struggles with debilitating migraines and costochondritis has found so much relief through Genevieve’s treatments. My daughter always says she feels like she’s 'floating in a warm bath' when Genevieve works on her." - K
